Foil and parchment can both be useful, but an air fryer depends on fast-moving hot air. Placement matters more than the material itself.

IQ
THE QUICK ANSWER

You can usually use foil in a basket-style air fryer if your manufacturer permits it, the foil is secured beneath food, and it does not block airflow or touch the heating element. Never preheat with loose foil or parchment inside.

01

How to use foil safely

Keep foil inside the basket, make it smaller than the food and ensure the food holds it securely in place. Never allow it to reach the heating element.

Model instructions differ, so your appliance manual always takes priority.

02

What about parchment paper?

Choose heat-safe perforated air fryer parchment and place food on top before the fan starts. The holes help retain airflow around the basket.

Smart tip

Start checking at the earliest suggested time. You can always add two minutes; you cannot undo an overcooked result.

03

When to avoid a liner

Skip liners when maximum airflow is essential, and avoid foil with strongly acidic food because it can react with aluminum.

04

Why manufacturer advice differs

There is no single rule for every air fryer. Basket shapes, heating-element positions and airflow paths differ. Philips, for example, advises against baking paper and foil in specified Airfryer models because covering the basket or pan disrupts airflow and loose material can reach the heating element.

Other manufacturers may permit a correctly sized liner in particular models. Your manual is the deciding source: if it prohibits foil or paper, do not use it even if a general online guide says otherwise.

05

A five-point liner checklist

Confirm the manual permits it; keep the liner within the basket; leave ventilation openings clear; place food on top before switching on; and use only material rated for the cooking temperature.

Stop immediately if paper lifts, edges darken rapidly or the liner shifts toward the heater. Never use wax paper, ordinary paper, plastic wrap or a liner whose heat rating is unknown.

A note on appliances

Air fryers vary in power and basket design. Use these timings as a starting point and follow your manufacturer’s instructions where they differ.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can tin foil go in an air fryer?

Tin foil usually means aluminium foil. Some models permit it and others advise against it, so check your manual. If permitted, secure it under food and never block airflow or contact the heater.

Can parchment paper go in an air fryer?

Only if your manufacturer permits it. Use heat-rated, preferably perforated parchment, trim it to the basket and always weigh it down with food before the fan starts.

Can you put foil in the bottom pan to catch grease?

Do not do this unless the manufacturer specifically allows it. Covering the grease-collection area can disrupt the designed airflow and affect cooking or safety.

What foods should not touch aluminium foil?

Avoid extended contact with strongly acidic or salty foods such as tomatoes, citrus-based marinades or vinegar-heavy sauces, which can react with aluminium.
